Tankinis were invented about a decade ago by swimwear designer Anne Cole. She started her career in the business her father created. But in the 1980s Anne Cole launched her own line of swimwear, under the name “Anne Cole Collection”.After 10 years she decided to mix a tank top with a bikini bottom. With that significant difference she created the tankini. After only two years, almost every swimwear designer was offering the tankini . In no time tankini sales were approximately 30% of all swimsuits sold.
In addition to tankinis other combinations of swimwear became popular. Skirtinis are the combination of tank tops and a skirted bottom. The camikini, has a thin lingerie strap, and the bandini has a the bandeau strapless top. There is no limit to the types of combinations possible.
So who are wearing tankinis? Tankinis are perfect for women who are seeking more coverage than provided by classical swimsuits. Other people who make be interested in tankinis include: pregnant women, larger women and women who are actively involved in water athletics like rafting and don’t want to worry their swimsuit while enjoying their sport.
Tankini bottoms and tops also available as separates. Women may combine printed tops with solid bottoms allowing women to mix and match in a way not possible with many other kinds of swimwear. With the aging of the population one can expect tankinis become even more popular and even become the most frequently seen type of swimwear for women.
